It's official - it's finally cold enough for jacket season. We're now past those in-between days where it's too cool in the morning and too warm in the day to dress consistently, and now it looks like we're going to be layering up on a regular basis. As any fashion-conscious person will know, jacket season offers both opportunities and predicaments, and figuring out what jacket to wear or introduce into your wardrobe isn't exactly easy.
To try and ease your style burdens, we here at The Sole Supplier have decided to highlight three classic outerwear silhouettes, offering you a diverse approach to styling this winter! Check out our suggestions below, or alternatively, check out ASOS' full selection of jackets and coats here.
First up, we have a workwear classic that has soared in popularity in the last decade. Defined by its robust construction, button closure and often contrasting collar, the chore coat first made its appearance back on the scene all the way back in the 19th century in France. Built for tough physical work, the chore coat championed robustness above all, but it wouldn't be until recent years that it would be adopted under fashion circumstances.
Championed by brands such as Carhartt, Dickies and Stan Ray, the chore coat pays homage to its workwear roots while offering a laid-back approach to winter styling. With a variety of prints, patterns and hues on offer, the chore coat can be worn alone with a T-Shirt underneath or alternatively can be layered with a hoodie to put more of a contemporary spin on things.
The only downside to chore coats is they're not usually very warm. Lined additions are available from selected brands, but even still, this will be one you will likely have to layer during the extremely cooler months. Check out our top pick from Carhartt available above.
Despite the majority of modern offerings being lightweight and packable, the anorak first originated in the Artic, where it was worn by indigenous people to keep them warm and protected from harsh weather. Nowadays, the anorak is a fashion staple in many of our wardrobes, offering a versatile approach to autumnal and winter styling.
Strictly speaking, the anorak usually arrives with a hooded pull-over construction without a frontal opening. However like with all clothing, as time goes on, the lines become blurred, so don't be surprised if others come equipped with a full-zip opening.
One of the few downsides about the anorak is the fact it doesn't really offer many options when it comes to styling. Unlike the chore coat, the anorak works better as a standalone piece, meaning you're unlikely to fit a hoodie or sweatshirt underneath.
Finally, on the list, we have what many would consider a UK staple. The puffer jacket is the ultimate winter outerwear piece, and at this point, its reputation simply proceeds it. The origins of the puffer date back to 1938 when outdoor enthusiast Eddie Bauer caught hypothermia on a fishing trip, leading him to design a garment with warmth in mind.
As the name would suggest, the puffer jacket often flaunts an array of bulbous panels on the outside, each containing either down or synthetic material filling. Typically, puffers have a full-zip closure at the front with the addition of pockets on the sides, but on rare occasions, some can feature quarter-zip finishes.
Similar to the anorak, the puffer jacket typically isn't the best for layering. However, with the right silhouette, the puffer can become quite the standout piece in our looks.
