Ah, British Summer. The most unpredictable season of them all. One minute we’re leaving the house in glorious sunshine, and the next it’s hailing. The real conundrum for this season is what to wear. You know when you go on holiday abroad you’re pretty much guaranteed sunshine and warmth, so twelve variations of ‘a crop top and shorts’ are okay to place your bets on. Here, it’s not so easy. We’ve put together some handy hints and tips for what to wear when it’s continuously swapping between sunshine and showers.
Of course, we appreciate that 'rain or shine' is a broad term, so let’s clear that up first. We’re not talking about in the winter when it’s 3 degrees yet sunny, however could drizzle at any moment. We’re not even talking tropical storm-type weather. Picture this: 18-20 degree heat; a small, but slightly cool breeze; and the occasional grey cloud that unleashes hell for a couple of minutes before a beautiful rainbow appears. Bit specific? Okay, okay. You can take any variation of the above, but don’t blame us if you’re too hot or too cold. It’s such a tricky line to balance!
The general theme for making sure that you will never be sweating or shivering is layers. Onions have layers and so should you on these unpredictable days. We’ve rounded up some of our favourite jackets on ASOS atm, including ones from uber-cool Dickies and Carhartt, so you don’t have to compromise style for comfort. If you’re unsure how ASOS Design or Carhartt WIP fits, check out the size guides by clicking the links!
If you’re looking for a jacket that you’ll also be able to fit a sweatshirt or hoodie under, then make sure to buy one or two sizes up! And don’t worry about it looking too big, because this is exactly the style that is so in right now. Generally, these lightweight jackets will be great for taking the chill off, without making you feel like you’re dressing up for February in August.
Next up, we are giving jumpsuits and dungarees a chance. We don’t feel like these comfy co-ords get the recognition they deserve. Yes, it’s a bit of a chore when you need the loo, but they look so cool! And they are perfect for this weather. The wide-leg on the first one means that they are bright and breezy, for those days when it’s too cool for shorts, but skinny jeans are an absolute no-no. And who can resist a good bit of contrast stitching? Not us, it seems.
If you are one to brave a pair of jeans when it might just get that tad too warm, make sure to go for some baggy ones! You don’t want to be sticking to them. And you still want to look summery, right? This is why we’ve gone for light-coloured, pastel hues that still scream summer even though it’s a bit cold. Maybe cargo pants are more your style? Don’t worry - we’ve got that covered too.
Shirts are great for when you need something a little light and are definitely not ready to brandish a bandeau. The following are all super cute and will go with a whole range of outfits, perfect for rain-or-shine styling. Shirts can be a little hard to layer, admittedly, so these are for those days when a top and a light jacket (and maybe an umbrella) is all you need, as a sweatshirt might make you sweat.
Finally, what is the perfect accessory that fits so many of our needs? A hat, of course! Hats are ideal for keeping the sun out of your eyes when it’s bright, and protecting that freshly washed hair from the rain when it decides to tip it down! Need we say more? You now have all the perfect ingredients for tackling the unpredictable weather. Remember, don’t forget to check the forecast before leaving the house (not that we trust what it says!), as well as packing suncream AND an umbrella. Don’t say we didn’t tell you so!
