Chances are, if you’re into your sneakers, you’ll have heard of Tom Sachs. His Mars Yards are one of the most coveted pairs on the sneaker scene, but the artist is also a legend in his own right. From bricolage sculpture, to deconstructed furniture, and his own interpretation of NASA’s Mars Mission, the man isn’t short on vision or talent, so when he first teamed up with Nike on their “NikeCraft” project, it was only appropriate that the approach to the products created was transparent, scientific and incredibly methodical. Since its first iteration, the high-performance Mars Yard has seen a 2.0, Overshoe, and a couple of 2.5 “Wear Test” samples, but now Sachs is back with a brand-new sneaker under the label – the Tom Sachs x NikeCraft “General Purpose Shoe.”
Whilst the Mars Yard was inspired by NASA scientists and designed with Sachs’ “Space Programme” in mind, the “General Purpose Shoe” seems to lend itself better to everyday wear. The sneaker is more low-profile in general, with the silhouette leaning towards that of the Nike Killshot. Unlike the Mars Yard, takes on more of a tonal cream colour palette across the construction, which is made up of a mesh base and suede overlays. A flat, white Nike Swoosh decorates the side of the shoe, and Tom Sachs and NikeCraft branding appear on the tongue tab and insole. The pair is finished with a gum midsole.
As with all Tom Sachs x NikeCraft releases, details remain heavily under wraps for now, but we’d love to see the “General Purpose Shoe” release later this year (along with a Mars Yard restock, cough cough). For now, enjoy these early images and keep it locked for more info as it comes in.
Up next, KAWS and The North Face are teaming up for a collab.
