Salomon and COMME des GARCONS Take Gorpcore to New Heights (Literally)

As Gorpcore continues its trajectory as one of the biggest trends of 2022, there’s no denying that behind the hype lies its extreme practicality. Brands that have benefitted from the trend, such as Arc’teryx and Salomon, have always created products from a function-first point of view, and although great design has played a part, mainstream fashion is far from the goal. Things do seem to be shifting however, as Salomon’s latest collaboration sees the brand join forces with COMME des GARCONS, for a new, Avant Garde take on its typical trail runner styles.

As adventurous as the collaboration is, it’s not one that you’d want to wear out on your next hike. The CdG x Salomon Pulsar Platform sees a techy Matryx® upper come married to a stacked Energy Foam sole, and no matter the level of grip underfoot, is sure to result in a few twisted ankles when taken out on the trails. Alternatively, the accompanying SR90 loses the platform, and opts for a much more minimalistic take on a trail shoe in an all-white or all-black colourway. It’s a far cry from the outlandish XT-6s that have taken over on social media, and the pairs look almost too luxurious to wear when running through muddy puddles.

While Salomon purists may take some convincing on the new silhouettes, CdG’s fanbase is more than used to seeing Rei Kawakubo put her high-fashion spin on sneakers, and sometimes having a cult following is just as effective as mainstream success.
