NYC-based lifestyle and fashion imprint Aimé Leon Dore and its founder Teddy Santis have received a significant level of attention in the footwear industry as of late. After Santis teamed up with Boston footwear label New Balance in late 2020 to restore the brand's archived New Balance P550 basketball silhouette, both new and seasoned sneakerheads alike have started to pay more close attention to their releases. And now that a collection of New Balance 550 colourways are finally on the market, the pair has now officially unveiled a new project they've been working on—the revival of the New Balance 650R, a high-top version of the NB550s. Keep reading on as we take a closer look at the Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance 650R.
Early this year, Santis uploaded an old image on his Instagram channel of what appears to be a vintage New Balance 650R, captioned "Do we bring back the pack?". It goes without saying that long-term New Balance fans were definitely thrilled by this teaser. But today is even a better day as the remastered version of the '80s model, naturally a collab with ALD, has been revealed!
From these official images, it is clear that the New Balance 650R bears distinct features of the New Balance 550s: a perforated tumbled leather upper, mesh accents, and bold co-branding details. However, what sets this apart from the 550s is the high-cut, thick-padded collars, so expect maximum comfort and ankle support.
The Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance 650R looks like they'll be available in 3 classic colourways: "Green", "Navy", and "Grey". As for its release date, Santis has hinted at a drop in 2022.
