BAPE just threw a massive curveball. While we all expected more camo drenched kicks, the Tokyo heavyweight decided to crash the formal footwear party. The BAPE LOAFER STA merges high society structure with a rugged street soul.

The industry is currently obsessed with "sneaker loafers." Everyone from New Balance to HOKA wants a piece of this hybrid action. BAPE jumps into the ring by introducing the brand’s first ever loafer silhouette.
Nigo’s brainchild has always mastered the art of the remix. Think back to how the BAPE STA reimagined the Air Force 1. Now, the brand applies that same energy to the humble penny loafer. It feels like a natural progression from the retro basketball vibes of the CLUTCH STA or the suede runner aesthetic of the SHARK STA.
Don’t let the laceless upper fool you; this thing is built like a runner. BAPE actually lifted the sole from the SHARK STA and slapped it straight onto this silhouette. You get the aggressive, jagged tooth stitching on the mudguard; a nod to those iconic shark hoodies; paired with the "raised piping at the toe and pocked uppers" typical of a formal shoe.
The result? A shoe that looks like it belongs at a wedding but feels like it belongs on a skateboard. BAPE describes it as a way to ensure the shoe achieves a tailored, refined form while maintaining the lightweight, comfortable feel of a modern sneaker.
The standout feature here isn't the leather; it's the loose change. Every pair comes with a custom, removable penny for the vamp. It isn't just any coin, though. Inspired by the Japanese 1 Yen coin, the metallic detail is carefully stamped with BAPE’s signature Ape Head motif.
Okay, now for some bad news: this is currently a Japan only exclusive. If you want a pair, you’ll need a proxy or a flight to Tokyo. It marks one of the “more unexpected stories out of their newsroom this year,” and honestly, we’re here for the chaos. Hybrid shoes often fail because they try too hard to be both things at once, but BAPE leans so heavily into the runner sole that it actually works.

If you happen to be in Tokyo, you might still be able to get your hands on these. For the rest of us, we’ll be refreshing the resell sites and hoping for a wider UK drop.
