Fashion insiders have been celebrating the life of the late Virgil Abloh, who sadly passed away after a 2-year-long battle with cancer. The designer-DJ-creative director multihyphenate was the founder of Off-White and the artistic director at Louis Vuitton Menswear, as well as an all-round creative with projects that spanned across fashion, music and art.
After the news sadly broke on Sunday, Louis Vuitton agreed to honor Virgil’s last wishes and go ahead with the showing of his SS22 collection in Miami. The presentation, now named “Virgil was Here,” was much more than just a collection preview, and ended up being a star-studded celebration of Virgil Abloh’s life and career, with friends, family and colleagues such as Kanye West and Pharrell Williams in attendance.
Alongside the presentation of the SS22 collection, LVMH unveiled a huge statue of the late Artistic Director. The large-scale statue was dressed in multicolour, and showed the designer looking up to the skies whilst holding a monogrammed marked canvas. The shows closing ceremony also saw a drone show, which lit up the skies to say “Virgil was Here.”
Speaking on Virgil’s incredible talent, LMVH CEO Bernard Arnault said “We are all shocked by this terrible news. Virgil was not only a genius designer and a visionary, he was also a man with a beautiful soul and great wisdom. The LVMH family joins me in this moment of great sorrow and we are all thinking of his loved ones on the passing of their husband, father, brother, son and friend.”
