It feels like it’s been a while since the first Union LA x Nike Cortez colourway emerged, but as sneakerheads eagerly await the boutique’s takes on the Dunk and the Jordan 2, it’s looking like a third Cortez will be coming too. Joining both the “Khaki Red” and “Black Turquoise” pairs, the Union LA x Nike Cortez “Grey Yellow” is the latest shade to hit social media, so let’s take a look at the sneaker.
Whilst the Cortez may feel a bit of a left-field choice for a collab in 2022, there’s a good reason for it. The track shoe was originally released in 1972, making it the 50th anniversary year for the silhouette. After finding its feet on the track when it was worn by U.S. athletes in the 1972 Olympics, Nike's shoe became a pop culture icon, so who better than LA-based Union to pay homage to the style?
Sporting a heavy-duty striped burlap base and hairy suede overlays, the Union x Nike Cortez is more rough and ready looking than Cortez runners past. The “Grey Yellow” UNLA Cortez are brighter than other pairs in the pack, with yellow and pink bringing bright colours to the burlap, contrasting with a bold blue that dresses the Nike Swoosh, dual-layered heel tab, tongue tab, laces and the front of the eyestays. Elsewhere, the muted grey shade takes over the overlays, and Union LA branding hits can be spotted at the forefoot, heel and tongue tabs, and branded cork insoles. A mottled, Crater Foam sole completes the pair.
There’s currently no word on a release date for the “Grey Yellow” Union LA x Nike Cortez, or for the rest of the Cortez collection yet, but be sure to keep it locked if the pairs are on your radar, as we’ll be the first to let you know when we hear more.
Up next, the sacai x Nike VaporWaffle could finally be dropping soon.
