What Is Air Max Day?

The world of sneakers is ever-growing, with lots of new models, colourways and sneaker collectors coming into the space daily. However, there are not many seasonal events in the sneaker calendar apart from your usual restocks and retro comebacks, so we sneakerheads look forward to annual happenings like Black Friday drops and SNKRS Day. On top of those, another significant event we also mark off our calendars is Nike Air Max Day.

With that said, we are gearing up for another Air Max Day here at The Sole Supplier, so we invite you to join us by reading on to find out what's so special about Nike Air Max Day, when it is, how do people celebrate it, what releases to look forward to, and many more!

Air Max Day is a yearly holiday held by sportswear label Nike to honour its Air Max technology that has remained timeless since the late '70s. It's a day commemorating the silhouettes that have opened many opportunities for the development of models like the Nike Tailwind in 1978, which was the first Nike shoes to possess the Air within, then followed by Tinker Hatfield's Air Max 1 in 1987, the first pair to feature the visible Air. The saga of these legendary footwear creations led to the birth of some of our most-loved Air Maxs today, such as the Air Max 90, Air Classic BW, Air Max 95, Air Max 97, Air Max TN Plus, plus far more.

Some of the exciting things that the Swoosh team offers many sneakerheads look forward to are exclusive releases like restocks of OG colourways, new designs, collaborative offerings, and community events too.

Air Max Day is held on March 26th every year; the same day the Nike Air Max 1 released in 1987. The annual Nike holiday celebration began on March 26 2014. On Air Max Day, special drops usually occur throughout the day, and a big focus is also put on the Nike community throughout the week, leading up to the day itself.

Air Max is more than just a pair of trainers; it's a treasured part of history that has brought communities together within sports, art, streetwear, music, and many others.

Not to forget that Air Max Day 2017 also saw Nike's "Vote Forward" campaign, which involved twelve creatives around the globe. The twelve designers, called "RevolutionAirs", were asked to create their very own Air Max sneaker, which led to the release of the legendary Sean Wotherspoon x Nike Air Max 1/97 in 2018, thanks to the community's votes.

Aside from the limited-edition releases on Air Max Day that people are undeniably excited about, the community members are just as important. Thus, Nike spotlights those people that truly value the brand. Whether you're an artist, influencer, or purely a dedicated Nike sneaker collector, Air Max Day welcomes everyone!

The inauguration of Air Max Day in 2014 delivered the Air Max 1/97 that featured the upper of the OG AM1 "Varsity Red" from 1987 and a "Volt" Air midsole. The cherry on top wasn't just the "3.26"-branded tongue labels but the air-filled bubble packaging rather than a standard Nike shoebox.

The winner of Nike's "Vote Forward" campaign in 2017 was American sneaker designer and co-founder of Round Two, Sean Wotherspoon. His Air Max 1/97 is a hybrid of two iconic Nike AM silhouettes: the Air Max 97's upper constructed on top of the Air Max 97's sole unit underneath. The base features a colourful corduroy setup that pulls inspiration from vintage Nike hats and other accessories.

The Nike Air Max collection has tremendously grown in numbers since entering the world of sneakers. Nike Air Max Day 2020 offered us the new Air Max 2090 model, which nods to the Air Max 90 and its future. The shoe featured darker colour blocking and an Air pod larger than its predecessor. The shoe possessed white and pink as its inaugural colourways, but it also emerged with the AM90 as part of the Air Max "Duck Camo Pack" that pays tribute to the cult-favourite duck camouflage pattern from the Air Max 90 "Atmos Duck Hunter Camo" in 2013.

Altogether, Air Max Day is all about you and your kicks. There is so much to look forward to this Air Max Day 2022, including the interactive SNKRS live game show dubbed "Give Fresh Air: The Game Show" that aims to raise funds for a good cause.

There will also be a handful of notable releases, like the Europe-exclusive Nike Air Max 1 "La Ville Lumière", the North America-exclusive Nike Air Max 1 “Blueprint”, and the collaborative trio of the Concepts x Nike AM1s.
