Launched in 2003, the collaboration between Paris-based Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto and German sportswear brand adidas has continued to challenge the status quo in footwear design. Y3 has dipped in and out of popularity with sneakerheads due to its challenging design language and high price point. Embracing the latest technology and experimental silhouettes has often been Y3’s ethos, which in return has attracted a cult fanbase. This latest pair of adidas Y-3 Runner 4D Halo in the Black and White colourway is yet another example of Y-3’s unorthodox design.
Like the previous Y-3 Runner 4D Halo, the midsole uses adidas’ 4D technology which was introduced back in 2012. The sole uses a tread pattern similar to that of a golf shoe, providing enough traction for your commute within an urban expanse. The neoprene upper looks simple until you notice the mismatched lacing system which fits into the disruptive motif that the shoe explores. The TPU heel cage is without a doubt the shoe’s most unique feature, serving a functional as well as aesthetic purpose. Further support can be found on the toe box via an infused rubber “Y” that helps maintain the shape of the one-piece upper. Waxed laces serve as a final premium touch that only makes the design more distinct than it already is.
