After decades of rumours, whispers and unofficial versions, the Terror Squad x Nike Air Force 1 Low will finally be available to buy. Hip Hop legend and sneaker royalty Fat Joe has been one of the biggest players in footwear culture, well-known for everything from his iconic ‘sole lick’ to repping unapproved Terror Squad Air Force 1s in his Lean Back music video, the man has been moving the needle since the early 2000s. Over two decades since a Nike employee was fired for making a string of illegal TS x Air Force 1 colourways and a tip from Virgil Abloh days before his passing, the culture will no longer have to wait to get these grails on foot.
Fat Joe recently said in an interview, “20 years ago I had a game against Jay-Z in street basketball that never happened…Jay-Z had LeBron, I had Carmelo, Stephon Marbury, Allen Iverson, it was going down. But in New York, it was so hot that day that a blackout happened, so we weren’t able to play the game. So in honour of the game that never happened, the biggest street basketball game that never happened, that’s why we pulled out the Air Force 1.” While fifteen to twenty thousand people were estimated to have attended that day at the legendary Rucker Park basketball court in Harlem, the game unfortunately never took place. Thankfully this Air Force 1 is now part of the game’s mythical status and certainly one that attendees will be eager to cop.
Living up to the shoe’s grail status, the pair is said to be kitted out in premium leather from heel to toe, with Fat Joe even stating on the Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM show that “Nah I ain’t gonna lie to you, these Black ones I’ve worn them twenty times and still ain’t creased”. While the hip-hop legend may have mastered keeping his sneakers crispy, it could also be the case that the Swoosh has used similar tooling from its “Fresh” series of the AF1 to keep them looking box-fresh for longer. However, there’s only one way to find out for yourself. Arriving in an OG orange box that the 40th Anniversary editions came in, the duotone colourway is a super easy pair to rock, detailing that black and white panelling to represent the blackout that occurred that summer’s day in ‘03. Sporting the highly sought-after “TS” insignia on the outer heel, that detail alone is enough of a reason for OG sneakerheads to start furiously waving their hard-earned cash at the release.
The Terror Squad x Nike Air Force 1 Low “White Black” will be hitting the Nike SNKRS app on the 16th of September, with a lot of speculation surrounding how limited the drop will be. If you’ve been waiting nearly two decades to grab a pair for the collection, then make sure to hit our “Notify me” bell to avoid that post-drop regret.
