LA-based Born x Raised has brought its A-game to this Nike SB Dunk collaboration. Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time the two have partnered up, with Born x Raised and Nike releasing a small run of friends & family Air Force 1 ’22 “Sadie Hawkins”, a pair that coincided with the exclusive holiday event in Los Angeles. With this SB Dunk being BxR’s first public release, the founders and creative directors of the brand, Spanto and 2Tone have gone all out on the details.
Loaded with holographic features, slogans and quality materials, there’s a lot to absorb. The perforated toe box and eyelets have been updated with cross emblems, a nod to the heavy religious symbolism within the East LA Chicano street style. The “On the Turf” slogan written in the classic Nike font references the cross-over between the 90s skate and gang culture mentality, a lifestyle which for the most part, plays out on the streets. The holographic finish on the Swoosh and heel tab is a unique touch that is rarely seen on Nike products, further adding to the shoe’s distinct storytelling. An embroidered pink emblem sits on the outer heel, inspired by the Low Rider Custom Spray designs that are part of the BxR aesthetic, a look we’ve seen before on the coveted Nike Air Force 1 Low Mr. Cartoon “Blue Tattoo” from 2005. These arrive with a set of spare fat pink laces and white laces that highlight different elements of the upper, helping you make these feel more personal to you.
After the untimely passing of Born x Raised owner Chris "Spanto" Printup on the 28th of June, the release had been rightfully delayed as the two brands decided on how to respectfully drop the collaboration. Set to land on the BxR US website on the 28th of September, a UK release date has been rumoured surrounding the 5th of October, although that it yet to be confirmed.
