Nike is no stranger to dropping the occasional “Split” version of an iconic model. The shoe that did this first and arguably the most famous of the “Split” pairs are the “Scarface” Air Force 1s from 2006. Held in high regard amongst the sneakerhead community, the split features would eventually make its way onto the Air Jordan 1 High through the “Homage to Home” release in 2018 which included the iconic Bulls colours. Now exploring the split motif is the Nike Dunk Low in the iconic “Chicago” red.
The most noticeable change takes place on the Swoosh where a light grey tumbled leather transitions into smooth black leather, causing a literal split. The sole also reflects this motif as the classic Dunk tread battles between a grey toe and black heel. Nike’s standard tongue patch has been given an update for this edition too as a black stitch line run printed down the centre. On the left of the stitch, the “ni” adopts the vintage 70s Nike font, while on the right a more contemporary block capital lettering takes over the “KE” portion of the brand’s name. This divide between the old and new gives us a strong indication of the storytelling behind these, but until then, the Swoosh still has us guessing.
