The Nike Dunk Low celebrates Setsubun, the first day of spring in the old Japanese calendar, with its newest iteration, the Nike Dunk Low Setsubun Devil.
This low-cut shoe has a creamy-hued smooth leather base showing on the toe box and the quarter. Dark brown suede covers the toe cap, the mudguard and the heel while the rest of the overlays on the eyestay panel and the foxing are a stone-coloured brown. The signature profile Swooshes are in eye-catching purple suede with a cream underlay outlining them. A Swoosh-branded horned demon mask is embroidered in the same purple hue on the lateral heel. The most striking detail of this shoe are insoles featuring “Kintoki Throwing Beans at Fleeing Demons” artwork from renowned Ukiyo-e artist, Utagawa Kuniyoshi. This scene actually portrays the main ritual of Setsubun called “mameki”, wherein the entire household throws roasted soybeans out the door or family members oni demon masks while saying, “Demons out, good luck in!” A white midsole and a semi-translucent caramel-coloured gum outsole round out the shoe’s look.
