Nike has ventured into the nostalgic world of Low Poly video games, drawing inspiration from one of the most iconic titles of the genre: GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64. This revolutionary first person shooter, based on the 1995 James Bond film starring Pierce Brosnan, serves as the muse for a new colourway of the retro inspired Air Max 1, paying tribute to a fan favourite unlockable cheat code.
For those unfamiliar, GoldenEye 007 became a gaming legend after its release in 1997. The latest Air Max 1 design draws on the game’s key elements. The black and white upper is a nod to Bond’s classic tuxedo, while the gold accents are a tribute to the game’s mythical and powerful weapon; the Golden Gun. Adding to the nostalgia, Nike Air branding on the heels is accompanied by red and blue bars, cleverly referencing the health and armour metres that gamers will instantly recognise.
Even decades after its release, GoldenEye 007 remains a cult classic. `Despite its now primitive graphics compared to today’s hyper realistic video game engines, it continues to captivate fans, thanks in part to its legendary soundtrack; particularly the unforgettable Pause Menu theme.
Blending gaming and sneaker culture, the Air Max 1 “Big Head Mode” made its virtual debut in Fortnite’s Item Shop before hitting physical shelves, letting players style their avatars with the pair in game. Stay tuned to The Sole Supplier as we get more news on these sneakers.
