As the sneaker industry looks to move towards more sustainable ways of doing things, Boston-based Reebok has teamed up with London label Maharishi for the duo’s second collaborative sneaker this year: the Maharishi x Reebok LT Court Hemp. Ditching the sneaker’s usual leather construction for a plant-based alternative, the sneaker speaks to Maharishi’s mission to produce more ethically-sound, long-lasting and environmentally sustainable clothing.
The Maharishi x Reebok LT Court sees a natural-coloured hemp-based fabric make up the upper, while a chalk and green rubber sole unit sits underfoot. Pops of army green add to Maharishi’s military-inspired aesthetic, and co-branded hits sit at the laterals and heels.
Speaking on the choice of fabric, Maharishi founder Hardy Blechman said: “Hemp belongs to one of Earth’s most versatile, resilient, and advanced plant families, which makes it particularly meaningful to Maharishi as a medium for product creation.” He went on to point out that Hemp is also naturally resistant to pests, and once harvested, its decomposed roots also enrich and strengthen the soil in which it grew.
The Maharishi LT Court Hemp offers a natural, understated take on the model and is set to release at Maharishi’s store on the 28th of October, with a wider release planned for the 7th of November.
