Vans gave the flat skate shoe a completely new look by turning it into a Mary Jane. But forget everything you think you know about Mary Janes; this isn't the shoe you wore to school plays. Instead, Vans created a low profile, sporty hybrid with straps.
The Mary Jane Super LowPro starts with one of Vans' thinnest silhouettes, the track inspired LowPro, which itself references the classic Serio 84. The result is a shoe that feels incredibly lightweight and grips the ground well. Vans designed it with an undeniably delicate feel.
Earlier this year, Vans launched the Super LowPro, a flat soled trainer that drew inspiration from one of the old running shoes. Yes, the skate brand also makes runners! This model builds on the LowPro series and revives the heritage of Vans' first Mary Jane shoe, the Style 93.
As you'd expect, the Vans Mary Jane Super LowPro features a thin rubber sole similar to its predecessors. It also includes two straps across the foot, just like a classic Mary Jane. Another standout feature is the intricate embroidery, which gives the already feminine shoe a decorative and dainty feel.
Slender velcro straps span the leather upper, while detailed embroidery and crochet lace overlays give the shoe a softer edge. You'll find a cushioned collar for comfort, but the interior lining is deliberately minimal. Since the leather Vans Mary Jane Super LowPro is a premium trainer, you can count on it to have top quality materials.
The trainer combines a classic gum rubber waffle outsole with an EVA wedge midsole. This is a purposeful mix of balletcore and sportswear that works perfectly. Rather than clashing, the two styles come together to create a shoe that is both athletic and soft, somewhere between a track spike and a ballet slipper. Vans’ signature Side Stripe appears on this shoe as delicate threadwork.
Once a niche style, the Mary Jane now sits comfortably alongside Miu Miu flats, Sandy Liang's doll like trainers, and Simone Rocha's platform Crocs. These luxurious Vans Mary Janes join a broader trend of delicate and striking trainers designed for street style.
Look out for the Vans Premium Mary Jane Super LowPro coming soon to the brand's website. They will be available in Pink, Blue, Black, and Silver for £90. For your best chances of getting a pair for retail price, hit the "Notify me" button, and we'll let you know when they become available.
