COMME des GARÇON HOMME sets its eyes on the New Balance 580 in 2023, ready to douse it in its signature understated palette. Working on the New Balance 550 towards the end of last year, CdGH is back to its usual business with a refined take on Steven Smith’s illusive basketball silhouette. On the other end of the New Balance catalogue is the 580, a model that has been on quite the journey since its days as a Japanese cult favourite. Now CdGH approaches the silhouette, opting to delve into its familiar toolkit to strip back the tooling on this “Grey” edition.

Sat atop the NB 580’s chunky midsole is a dark set of suedes, merging the mudguard and forefoot together and simplifying the system of layered panels. A light grey mesh channels the shoe’s sporty aesthetic, a look we’ve seen before on the “V2 Navy” and “Castlerock” iterations, moving away from the early ‘00s collaborative library that helped gain traction for the NB 580. Typical of the 580’s branding, a white New Balance logo sits on the sidewall in a white leather, with COMME’s presence made clear by the simple “CdGH” addition on the heel tab.
