Having pretty much dominated the scene over the course of 2022, it's hard to pinpoint which of New Balance’s silhouettes could be considered the next big thing - as each release has been just as good as the last. This year, the brand has managed to show that it’s got something for everyone, whether that’s a retro basketball style like the 550, or a Y2K-inspired runner like the 1906R. Now, NB has turned its attention to another silhouette, the 580, and after letting Miami-born Stray Rats loose on the model, it's set to release three GR colourways in “Navy”, “Yellow/Orange” and “Olive”.
For those that are unfamiliar with the model, the NB 580 was originally released in the 90s as a Japanese exclusive. At the time, New Balance was having mixed success in the Asian markets, and while the 574 and 1400 were popular, other models weren’t seeing the same amount of success. In an effort to appeal to local tastes, some silhouettes underwent modification, and in 1996 the 580 was born as an adaptation of the Made in USA 585.
At the time, many running models had taken on a much slimmer profile design, and thanks to its bulky construction, the sneaker didn’t quite land in the resale market. It wasn’t until NB forged a partnership with Mita Sneakers and Real MadHECTIC in 1999 that the sneaker finally managed to break through into the streetwear market. A couple of collaborations then followed later down the line.
Though its chunky look was divisive at first, the sneaker’s build allowed for many creative colour-blocking options, which later helped it succeed in the collaboration sphere. Those who are clued up on their sneaker history will spot a couple of Stüssy references in these new colourways, with the “Olive” and “Yellow/Orange” pairs referencing the Real MadHECTIC x Stüssy 580s. Underfoot, all three pairs feature an ABZORB midsole and Rollbar technology for extra stability, calling back to the model’s running heritage.
Look for the pairs to drop over the next few months, and hit the release reminders for your best chance of getting your hands on them.
