Air Jordan 17 OG Varsity Red

Although Jordan Brand tends to focus on the Air Jordan rocked by MJ during his stint with the Chicago Bulls, the brand is revisiting a cult favourite silhouette that was first unveiled in 2002. Last seen in 2018 with an exclusive SoleFly collab, the Air Jordan 17 returns this 2024, reliving MJ’s latter years in his career with the Washington Wizards. This “Varsity Red” colour scheme is an OG colourway from 2002 draped in the ever-recognisable Chicago Bulls colours, re-releasing for the first time after over 20 years.

Designed by Wilson Smith III (Air More Uptempo and Air Jordan 16 designer), the Air Jordan 17 debuted after Michael Jordan’s second retirement. Inspired by jazz music, the shoe has a contemporary design aesthetic, headlined by a white leather upper and accented by subtle musical notes on the lace caps. The red mesh lace shroud complements the TPU stabiliser on the heel, with a hidden Air unit and a Zoom Air bubble in the forefoot - essential to provide maximum cushioning for an ageing MJ. Iconic Jumpman logos adorn the transparent lace lock, TPU heel panel, forefoot, and lateral rear midsole. Moving over to the decoupled outsole, several herringbone traction pods mimic golf courses, one of the favourite hobbies of “His Airness” aside from baseball and sports cars. Inside the sole is a full-length carbon fibre plate for superior support and stability. This “Varsity Red” colourway marks its first-ever re-release, joining other rumoured Air Jordan 17 releases in 2024, including several Low versions.
