Nike Air Max 1 ’86 OG Doernbecher Hailey

Nike’s annual fundraiser and exclusive partnership with the Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU) Doernbecher Children’s Hospital marks its 19th year in 2023, further solidifying one of the Oregon-based sportswear giant’s most significant and inspiring programs. The Doernbecher Freestyle XIX Collection gathers six young patients to create unique and intricate footwear and apparel, which are then auctioned off and sold via SNKRS and select retailers. Shining the spotlight on the only Air Max model in the collection, the Nike Air Max 1 ’86 OG “Doernbecher” is designed by 8-year-old Hailey Leyva, who honoured her medical journey with a heart-inspired ensemble.

Since its debut in 2004, the Nike x Doernbecher Freestyle Collection has raised over £30 million to benefit the hospital. With the help of Nike designers, the young patients showcase uplifting designs filled with rich storytelling elements from their personal experiences.

Hailey Leyva’s Nike Air Max 1 ‘86 masterpiece narrates her five heart surgeries at a young age, featuring a clean white leather base with hand-drawn hearts on the toe box to honour each family member. These lovely shapes also adorn the heel for added flair. The unique heart logo spotted on the tongue and sockliner represents the exact replica of Hailey’s heart, which was hand-drawn by the doctor to help explain the surgery process. Vibrant pink hues engulf the leather mudguard, laces, and wavy lines on the midsole, resembling the calm ocean waves. Metallic gold Swooshes and golden hearts on the lace dubraes and heel panel celebrate Hailey’s love for shiny things. The detachable bracelet consists of 10 charms representing Hailey’s favourite things, like ice creams, rainbows, and her pet. Gold speckles decorate the pink big bubble Air Max unit in the heel and semi-translucent rubber outsole. Hailey’s signature and one-of-a-kind heat are embossed on the lateral forefoot to wrap up this striking AM1 design.
