Nike Air Max 1 '86 OG Lost Sketch

Another piece of untold footwear history escapes from Tinker Hatfield’s stacks of sketchbooks. Previous releases such as the Nike Air Max Zero from ‘16, as well as the “OG Big Bubble” that dropped earlier in ’23, are other examples of when Nike delved back into Hatfield’s collection of ‘80s notebooks. Now landing on the shelves is this Air Max 1 ’86 OG “Lost Sketch” edition, mixing together the updated ‘80s shape with the iconic safari print.

Given that the Air Max 1 and Air Safari both released in ’87 as part of the brand’s revolutionary Air pack, it only makes sense that this animal print version of the runner was part of Hatfield’s thought process. Luckily, we did see this more directly referenced on the size? exclusive Safari pack from ’18, however there’s still a huge amount of sneakerheads out there eager to lace up more animal print footwear.

Bearing a blue-tinted safari print along the mudguard, this pair is certainly one that Air Max heads will have their eyes set on. The usual white mesh toe box has been given a dash of blue, with an almost light purple shade on the leather overlays that has yet to have graced the AM1 silhouette. Contrasting these various shades of blue is the aged midsole below, playing into the “Lost Sketch” theme which isn’t too far off of the “Lost & Found” story we were sold in ’22. The most direct reference to Tinker’s sketch comes via the ‘hand-drawn’ AIR on the midsole, a feature some sneakerheads may compare to Virgil’s distinct “AIR” design language. It’s also worth noting that this pair will arrive in the same aged box that the “Big Bubble” edition came in.
