As sneakerheads and more importantly fans of the late Virgil Abloh, we were happy to hear about the upcoming set of posthumous Off-White x Nike releases. After hosting an exhibition for Miami Art Week, over a hundred different Off-White iterations of the Swoosh were displayed, making the inspirations behind the Terra Forma a bit clearer. With the new silhouette set for a release this December in the “Wheat” and “White” colourway, the Terra Forma unfortunately remains somewhat of a mystery to sneakerheads. Talking on a Panel Livestream via the SNKRS app, Senior Nike designers Shamees Aden and Enrico Carbonere helped dispel the mysteries behind the shoe.
One of the standout features of the Terra Forma is the tongue which sticks out high above the rest of the shoe, extending the silhouette. This was Virgil paying homage to the Jordan family of sneakers, as the tongue was a continually changing detail throughout the Jordan line, just look at the change between the Air Jordan 1 and Air Jordan 15. On the Terra Forma, the tongue’s wing shape and the distorted feathering details all nod to the design language of “flight” that made the Air Jordan line so distinct and treasured.
Another interesting feature is the multicolour marbling effect on the midsoles around the iconic air unit. The colours here mimic the abstract colours found on climbing holds, tying into the rugged outdoor theme of the shoe and even the niche Gorpcore trend that Virgil was heavily influenced by. Just look at the picture of him and Drake wearing the matching Arc’teryx LEAF jackets or the unofficial Off-White Arc’teryx show from 2020, the outdoor aesthetic was something he fully embraced. The Terra Forma allowed him to explore his love for ACG, digging into the archives for obscure reference points such as the Traverse, a model which still remains elusive despite the large number of fan pages that surround the Nike division.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen spikes make an appearance on an Off-White x Nike collab either, first being adopted into the Off-White Terra Kiger 5, which divided opinions upon its release. This was Virgil once again tapping into his love for Nike Performance and how he championed their innovative technology.
As Virgil designed this silhouette from scratch, there is a lacking audience or fanbase, unlike the shoes that were designed for The Ten Collection. The Off-White x Nike Terra Forma is packed to the brim with design features and storytelling, a fact we have grown to expect with Virgil’s creations. Set for a first release this December, make sure you keep it locked in with us at The Sole Supplier for more information on the upcoming release!
