When it comes to sneakers, small details like the laces can often be overlooked. But from the concealed lacing unit of the Nike Air Max 97, to the adidas Arkyn's minimalist design, laces really do have the power to transform a sneaker silhouette into something new.
Here are some of our favourite – and some more unusual – picks for sneakers with unusual and interesting lacing units you should seriously consider adding to your rotation this season.
Diadora Wrap-Around lace – £216 | Shop now at Farfetch
This multicoloured suede silhouette is simple and effortless. The subtle nude tones on the Diadora's upper all tie in together, with the thin hiker-style laces wrapping all the way down the sidewall, underneath the outsole and back up to the top again. Style these with nude toned fitted trousers and a blazer for a put-together, casual look.
Nike x Ispa React – £140 | Shop now at Farfetch
One of the biggest sneakers of the moment, the Swoosh brand has brought us a utility staple with these black and grey addition to the ISPA family. The acronym stands for “Improvise, Scavenge, Protect, and Adapt” and the sneakers in this range are designed to be adaptive and functional to the build environment we live in. We love how the contrasting light grey criss-crossing laces dominate the upper, giving the sneaker a tough look.
Rhude x Puma Cell Endura – £129 | Shop now at Sneakers n Stuff
The Puma Cell Endura is definitely one of the more unusual-looking sneakers that are out at the moment, and the brand's collaboration with Rhude is giving us monochromatic minimalist vibes. The round tonal laces almost disappear into the rest of the sneaker as criss cross along the upper, making them look super sleek and minimal.
Balenciaga Track – £575 | Shop now at Farfetch
If you're a lover of the hiker/outdoorsy aesthetic, these Balenciagas are one to watch. Fashioned from rubber and polyester, these sneakers take the deconstructed look to the max, with multiple layers weaving in and out of each other, and gaps left between them. And when it comes to the laces, the bright red, blue, and white striped combo here is definitely a winner and a stand-out detail that we're loving.
Fila Ray Tracer Vapor Blue Highrise – £80 | Shop now at Office
Fila has been killing the dad shoe game for the past year since the revival of the disruptor II, but have you ever stopped to look at its sibling, the Fila Ray Tracer? Again, going with the hiking/rambler aesthetic, these sneakers feature bold striped laces that resemble a bumble bee in their yellow and black colouring, which is striking against the neutral grey upper.
adidas Arkyn Womens Legend Ink Black – £110 | Coming soon at 43 Einhalb
Going back to laces that span full width of the upper, we're seriously loving the sparse, minimal feel of the Arkyns. Here, thin black laces fit through bold embellishments that act as eyelets, bringing a bold contrast to the Legend Black Ink's black profile.
Nike Zoom 2k – £80 | Shop now at Office
Designed as a basketball version to the Nike M2K Tekno, this chunky silhouette is one to make a statement in. Here, each stepped eyelet has a letter printed with a black letter to spell out 'ZOOM' – and it's this attention to detail that we're loving, along with how wide set the laces are, meaning that they dominate the entire upper of the silhouette.
