Along with Christmas, Halloween, and Valentine's Day, St Patrick's Day is another event that inspires the sneaker scene. Celebrating the patron saint of Ireland, his influence has stretched far and wide. While he managed to drive all the snakes out of the Emerald Isle, he also somehow brought tonnes of bots into the sneaker game with these clover-filled creps.
With Paddy's Day arriving just around the corner, we're now taking a look back at some of the best St Pat's-inspired trainers of all time. Are you lucky enough to have these in your collection? Let us know, and be sure to keep your eyes peeled at The Sole Supplier for the latest and greatest sneakers and streetwear!
In 2021, the Beaverton brand took St Patrick's Day by storm with their themed collection which included the highly coveted Nike Air Force 1 "St Patrick's Day". Stuffed with Irish-inspired elements including a bold green and white colour palette, hundreds of little four-leaf clovers are also embossed onto the smooth leather for added depth. Of course, you can't talk about this drop without mentioning the metallic gold lace lock that's sure to bring some luck to you.
Just three years after the SB Dunk was announced, Nike worked on the very first Nike SB Dunk Low "St Patrick's Day". Pretty minimalistic in design especially when compared to some of the themed sneakers dropping these days, this arrived in the iconic pink and black box that's extremely sought-after even 17 years later. The leather on this pair was to die for back in the day, and if you see them for sale anywhere, make sure you cop right away because you've just struck gold.
2019 saw the release of the adidas Handball SPZL "St Patrick's Day Green" which came as part of a pack of three. Done up in the traditional green and orange colour palette, gold foil detailing is stamped onto the lateral side branding complete with a little shamrock graphic. Down below, you'll find a brown gum rubber midsole, and upon further inspection, you'll also spot St Patrick references in Gaelic as a definite nod to the patron saint.
17 years after the original pair, the Nike SB Dunk Low "St Patrick's Day" made a massive comeback, this time with even more references to the Irish holiday. Dressed in all-green suede that's buttery smooth to the touch, a metallic gold Swoosh shoots across the lateral and medial side panels while a gum rubber outsole ties everything together. Of course, you can't talk about this drop without mentioning the white clover that's finely stitched around the heel.
Before all the 990 hype that we all know now, New Balance dropped the New Balance Made in USA 990 "St Patrick’s Day" as an ode to the Emerald Isle. Dipped in a bright green colour scheme that is sure to turn heads, everything is made over in the States so you just know that what you're buying is extra premium. All of this, coupled with opulent gold accents and a speckled grey midsole, and you've got a winner in your hands.
Released alongside the aforementioned "Green", the adidas Handball SPZL "St Patrick's Day Brown" very obviously represents the national flag of Ireland. With a tricolour design that's done up in green, white, and orange, this all works on top of a "Clear Brown" suede base. As with the other colourway, references to St Patrick himself can be found around the midsole in Gaelic, automatically making this one of the most Irish sneakers that you can buy.
Before 2021's collection, the Beaverton brand actually dropped the Nike Air Force 1 "St Patrick's Day" back in 2006, but it looked completely different. This was at a time when they loved dabbling with patent leather. The front two-thirds of the shoe were done up in a forest green hue, while the back was dipped in a crisp white. Obviously, you can't talk about this colourway without mentioning the leprechaun hat graphic that comes complete with a royal gold buckle.
And last but not least, we have the Nike Air Max 90 "St Patrick's Day" which was almost, if not equally, as popular as its AF1 counterpart. With two shades of green working on top of a clean white base, you'll find hundreds of little four-leaf clovers throughout for a strong Paddy's Day vibe. These are still selling for quite a lot these days, so if you happen to have a pair just collecting dust, you're literally sitting on treasure.
