One of New Balance’s most popular collections going, the “Protection Pack” family is a firm favourite of sneakerheads and customers alike. Having graced the Boston-based brand’s 2002R silhouette, its 1906R is the next model in line to receive the treatment, which was largely credited with boosting the former style’s success.
Having initially made its debut in 2009, the 1906R was recently revived this year and has since seen a couple of special-edition releases that subvert the pairs’ typical mesh construction. The 1906R “Protection Pack” follows suit from that seen on the 2002R, meaning that the style’s mesh base comes layered with shaggy suede in tonal shades that are cut in jagged patterns across the uppers. Though we saw the 2002R arrive in a number of vibrant colourways in later iterations of the pack, the initial 1906R styles come in muted tones of black, grey and cream. No doubt we’ll see plenty of sneaker customisers change that very soon.
From here, an N-LOCK lacing system hits the tongue and side walls, while the caged heel detail adds a techy-looking edge. The sole units come packed with comfy cushioning: ABZORB tech and N-ergy cushioning ensure a smooth ride.
Take a closer look at the pairs right here, and be sure to hit the release reminders to be the first to know when they drop in 2023. Until then, here’s why New Balance dominated the sneaker scene this year.
