A bonafide classic, New Balance’s 990 range includes some of our favourite sneakers of all time. Although the sneaker has evolved many times over, each generation of the shoe has its own cult following, and therefore most versions are still available to purchase today. But the shoe game is ever-evolving, and after the incredible success of the 990v5 and a couple of v1, v2 and v3 releases, the Boston-based brand has turned its attention to the next chapter in the model’s history: the New Balance 990v6.
Thanks to a few early images of the sneaker (including a preview from Creative Director Teddy Santis himself) fans have had plenty of time to get excited about the upcoming iteration. Quite the departure from the v5 silhouette, the 990v6 looks to take on a much more chunky shape, while somehow managing to maintain a sporty look, similar to that seen on its predecessor. Detailing also borrows from versions past: the ribbed ‘N’ logo is borrowed from the 990v3, and the construction arrives in the usual pigskin suede and breathable mesh make-up.
The main difference between the New Balance 990v6 and previous versions is the chunky midsole that sits underfoot. Opting for a more contoured look, the sole unit boasts a curvier appearance, and appears to ditch the silhouette’s typical ENCAP branding for the brand’s FuelCell foam, which brings the pair more in-line with the imprint’s performance running range. Finally, the tongue branding has also received a make-over and opts for a pop of red to call out the v6 style.
But the shoe’s new chunky look isn’t for everyone, and the pair has left 990 fans feeling divided on the bulkier aesthetic. The sneaker is set to drop on the 15th of December, so there’s plenty of time left for these to grow on people. In the meantime, keep it locked to The Sole Supplier for all the latest sneaker news and release dates, and let us know your thoughts on the silhouette while we wait.
