Discover: How the Nike Air Huarache Sprinted to Stardom

Huarache - a leather-thonged sandal originally worn by Mexican-Indians. Back in 1991 when legendary Nike footwear designer Tinker Hatfield sat down to design a brand-new silhouette, he looked to the past to draw inspiration for a sneaker that was going to propel footwear fans straight into the future. Both Hiroshi Fujiwara and Mark Parker also worked closely on the project, which would eventually become known as the Nike Air Huarache.

The new silhouette showcased a design like we’d never seen it before, with the team opting for a look that was light-years away from anything the Swoosh brand had released previously. The Huarache offered up a neoprene upper with an inner Spandex sock that “hugged your foot”, as referenced by the original advertising campaign with the tagline “have you hugged your foot today?”.

One of the most captivating features of the Nike Air Huarache is the fact that it shows little to no Nike branding throughout the entire design. The iconic Swoosh logo that had been a staple on Nike sneakers previously was nowhere to be seen, instead replaced with a small Nike Air logo at the tongue and bold typeface Nike branding across the heel strap.

While we’re analysing the technical features of the silhouette it’s impossible not to mention the midsole. At the time of release Nike Air Max technology had already taken the footwear industry by storm and dominated the market, yet in his typical bold fashion, Hatfield decided to totally do away with it and instead utilise a Phylon midsole that quickly became a firm favourite for many athletes.

The OG colourways “Scream Green” and “Purple Punch” were an instant hit upon release, which is believed to be largely down to Nike’s aggressive marketing strategy. The silhouette was quickly endorsed by USA Olympic gold-medalist Michael Johnson, attributing to the actual functionality of the sneakers along with their cutting-edge looks that resonated within the growing streetwear/sneaker community.

Along with the aforementioned foot-hugging campaign, the Beaverton brand also launched a second series of adverts that claimed the Huarache was the shoe of choice for sci-fi TV character Buck Rogers. The posters showcased the “Scream Green” pair laid upon a design table and along with various technical specifications, they read “Yo Buck Rogers, Your Running Shoe Is Ready”. It was exactly this sort of wild approach that set the original Huarache campaigns so far ahead of anything else since, making them instantly memorable for those in the industry.

After the initial success of the Nike Air Huarache, the team over at the Swoosh didn’t want to just stop there. Unlike other successful launches, the HUA was followed almost instantly by several other variations of the design that were intended to serve different purposes. The Nike Air Flight Huarache debuted in 1992 and was designed specifically for the basketball court. Not long after the launch the sneaker was adopted by the University of Michigan’s Fab Five, who are widely considered as the greatest recruiting class of all time.

The Nike Air Flight Huarache, Nike Air Trainer Huarache and the Nike Air Tech Challenge Huarache all also launched throughout the year of 1992. The Nike Air Huarache Light followed on from the OG in 1993, slimming down the original technology for a refreshed and updated look. The HUA Light went on to become a classic in it’s very own right, with memorable releases including collaborative efforts with both Stussy and Footpatrol.

Fast forward to 2009 and our attention is brought towards the Nike Air Max 90 Current Huarache, one of the most captivating and aesthetically-pleasing hybrid models ever. Nike opted for the Frankenstein approach by totally fusing the AM90 and Huarache uppers for a one-of-a-kind creation, then placing it on top of a Free midsole unit for an even stranger look! Despite the total weirdness of the silhouette, it was a huge success, with both the HUF and DQM Bacon variations instantly springing to mind.

While the OG Nike Air Huarache was fortunate enough to receive a retro release in 1999, by the early 2010s it seemed the silhouette had met its demise. The hype surrounding Air Max models and newcomers such as the Nike Free Run was stronger than ever, with the Huarache long since forgotten, making regular appearances on the sale rack and popping up on the secondary market for next to nothing.

However, those collectors who managed to pick up original releases and limited-edition Huaraches for pennies would end up counting their lucky stars later on, as little did they know that the hype for the Huarache was about to be propelled to a level that no-one could ever have predicted. August 2014 saw the Swoosh brand retro both the “Scream Green” and “Purple Punch” iterations, although this time around the Nike Air badges at the tongues were instead replaced with the range-specific Huarache logo.

What Nike went and did next is (in my opinion) easily one of the greatest marketing moves to ever go down in the sneaker industry. Following on from the OG re-releases, the brand launched a flurry of ultra-limited releases that captivated the attention of the masses. Collaborations with retailers such as size? and re-releases of classic colourways were snapped up instantly by sneakerheads and quickly made their way into the rotations of the fashion-conscious around us. By late 2014, the Triple Black variant was set to drop for the first time ever and generated insane hype, with mile-long queues forming outside sneaker stores up and down the UK.

Mainstream media soon became aware of these queues and the stories were reported across major news outlets, exposing the public to the newfound hype around limited-edition sneakers. If you were there to witness it, you will without a doubt recall how at this point nearly everyone you knew wanted to get their hands on a pair of Huaraches. In the months following these events, Nike totally saturated the market by releasing new colourways almost weekly, allowing everyone who was lusting after a pair of Huaraches to get their hands on a pair.

This strategy has since been replicated many times by others and really is a tried-and-tested success. Kanye West’s hugely-popular Yeezy footwear line springs to mind, remember how limited the original run of Yeezy Boost 350s were? Several years later, Kanye and adidas are pumping out Yeezy releases weekly, allowing all those consumers who were hit with the initial hype-train to cop to their hearts desire.

By around 2016 it seemed that everyone who had wanted Huaraches had managed to secure their very own pair, leading to the inevitable decline in popularity. For a while they sat on shelves and Nike eventually halted production on the model and shifted budget elsewhere. The silhouette had actually garnered a new and slightly-bad reputation according to many, with the legendary status tarnished by how mainstream they had become. While this view was adopted by many, OG sneakerheads remained true to the cause and still supported the Nike Air Huarache for its legendary design and backstory.

This retrospective history brings us to where we are today with the Nike Huarache, as 2021 saw the Oregon-based brand reissue the OG “Scream Green” colourway once again (this time around with the original tongue labelling). The model remained absent from shelves since late 2016, however as we continue to power through 2022, the Huarache is now more present than ever. From high-heat collaborations from the likes of Stussy right through to retro releases of classic colourways, the model continues to impress sneakerheads across the globe all these years later.
