Chicago-based designer Joe Robinson, or Joe Freshgoods, has been among the most prominent New Balance collaborators in the past few years. With his limited sneakers often flying off the shelves instantly, JFG has certainly cemented his name in the sneaker industry. Closing out 2023, Joe Freshgoods delivers a trio of New Balance 990v4 colourways inspired by Hype Williams’ 1998 American crime drama movie Belly, the first and only feature film by the award-winning music video director. Also titled the “Outro” colourway, the Joe Freshgoods New Balance 990v4 “Black White” executes a contrasting colour scheme paying homage to the cult classic film.
The latest collaborative project between Joe Freshgoods and New Balance includes matching apparel inspired by the June 1999 issue of the XXL Magazine featuring hip-hop legends Ja Rule, Jay Z, and DMX as the cover stars. Harkening back to the late ‘80s New York City hip-hop fashion scene, this colourway flaunts a clean white mesh underlay with juxtaposing black pigskin suede and glossy patent leather overlays neatly shrouding most of the sneaker from heel to toe. Signature profile “N” branding adorns the sides in a pristine white tone, while a JFG label sits on the lateral rear.
The New Balance Made in the USA flag emblem decorates the tongue with an embroidered “990v4” positioned below. Furthermore, the heel features a “1998”, referring to the movie Belly’s release year, alongside additional NB and Made in the USA branding. Rounding out the fresh design of this collaborative NB 990v4 colourway is the black ENCAP foam midsole and durable rubber sole.
