After heading back to ’06 for the Air Jordan 4 “Thunder” retro, Jordan Brand rewind the clock once again on this early 2000s make-up. Although the Air Jordan 5 isn’t the most popular out of the numbered Air Jordan line-up, you’ll still find a large group of sneakerheads willing to go toe-to-toe with you on why these deserve the number 1 spot. For the first time since its original release back in 2006, the Air Jordan 5 “Burgundy” is receiving a retro, with eager Jordan heads hyped about adding these to their collection. Considering most OG pairs are either crumbling, beat or going for a hefty resell, demand for these is sure to be high!
For many, the burgundy hue is now tied to contemporary bangers such as the A Ma Maniére’s collaborative range or even the Air Jordan 7 “Cigar” from the beloved Cigar & Champagne pack that dropped in 2015. However, OGs will know that this retro predates all of the above and if anything, could have been the source of inspiration for those projects. A delicate suede panelling is stitched together with a contrasting silver-grey stitch just as it was on the original. In terms of quality, people are likening this release to the previous AJ5 “UNC” edition from earlier this year, so if you were a fan of those then you’ll want this in the rotation as well.
The retro tooling has also returned thanks to a series of changes from the design team at Jordan Brand, pouring a heavy focus on ensuring the new shape was truer to the original ‘90s version. Branding accents also arrive embroidered in a silver-grey thread, with a set of dark grey laces to complement the palette. The icy bottoms are also here to stay, with an added blue tint which prevents them from yellowing so quickly. Unlike the ’06 edition, there isn’t a retro card in the box or “LS” in the shoe’s title, although for the past decade, the retro editions have been considered more “Lifestyle” than performance compared to the early 2000s.
