Nike is turning back the clock to 2002 and reintroducing a true legend: the Mercurial Vapor 1 RGN cleats; the same ones Ronaldo rocked during Brazil’s jaw dropping World Cup win. These beauties return in their original “Chrome/Lime” glory, ready to make footballers and the fans of the beautiful game weak in the knees.
Nike loves a good nostalgia trip. While the Jordan Brand has been releasing classics after classics, the football lines have been in hibernation; until now. The MVP of cleats are finally making a comeback.
It seems like with this release, Nike wants to cash in big time. While adidas has been busy riding the ‘90s wave (shoutout to AS Roma’s fire ‘93 collection), Nike’s decided to own the 2000s. And what better way to do it than by resurrecting the chrome/lime Mercurial Vapor 1, the boot that made Ronaldo Nazário a walking cheat code of football?
The rebooted Mercurial Vapor 1 RGN looks like it just stepped out of a time machine but with a few modern upgrades. It's still a low-top, firm ground cleat in the OG design, but now it’s powered by Air Zoom cushioning and synthetic leather for that extra comfort and style. Brazil and Real Madrid star Vinícius Jr expressed his excitement by saying, "It's a really special feeling to use these boots now, knowing the history behind them."
For those who missed Ronaldo's prime, let’s get you up to speed. "El Fenómeno" wasn’t just a striker; he was the striker. Think god tier dribbling, killer ball control, and goals that got him standing ovations even from his rivals. His fearless play and resilience; overcoming two near career ending knee injuries, culminated in his unforgettable performances at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Nike positioned Ronaldo as its leading figure that year, equipping him with the revolutionary Mercurial Vapor to dominate the global stage.
Fast forward 22 years, and the Mercurial Vapor 1 is back with the same iconic silver base, lime accents, and that unforgettable “R9” logo on the mini tongue. Vinícius Jr, following in Ronaldo's legendary footsteps, hopes these boots inspire the next generation of Brazilian ballers to play with heart, flair, and a whole lot of swagger.
But there’s a catch: only 4,500 pairs are hitting shelves worldwide, just like in 2002. Each pair comes with a special numbered tag, so if you manage to snag one, congrats! You’ve got a slice of football history to flex.
The Nike Mercurial Vapor 1 RGN SE Chrome Lime will be dropping on 9th December for £255. Hit the bell icon above for your best chance at snagging these for retail.
