If you’ve been anywhere near TikTok lately, you’ll have noticed that Birkenstock Bostons are trending in a big way. Clogs are very much in for the autumn season, and are the perfect solution for the transitional season. If you’ve been looking to swap out your sneakers for something a little different, then listen up, because this is why you should be looking to add a pair of Bostons to your wardrobe.
Following on from a number of high-profile collabs with the likes of Stüssy, Dior and Rick Owens, the Birkenstock brand is having quite a moment, but its history can be traced all the way back to the 1700s. Having started as a typical shoemaking business, the base of Birkenstock’s iconic flexible footbed was developed 120 years after it was founded, but the sandals we know and love weren’t around until 1963.
The Boston Clog was introduced in 1979, and was developed because Birkenstock customers were looking for a style that would keep them comfortable all year round – hence the covered toe for added warmth. In the 1980s, the style became a bit of a counter-culture icon, and was a hit on US college campuses. The rise of the style right now is a slightly similar situation – only this time they’ve been championed by fashion insiders like Eva Chen, the Olsen twins and Kendall Jenner, and that was even before the designer brands jumped on board.
The fact is, Birkenstock Bostons are a real fashion shoe and will go with just about anything. Whether you’re planning on styling them with wide-leg trousers or jeans, dresses or shorts, the options are surprisingly endless. As the months get colder, there are even shearling options that’ll take you into winter – as both an outdoor option or as a cosy pair of slippers if you’re not quite brave enough to leave the house.
But people aren’t just buying Bostons for their look – they're also great for your feet too, and have been endorsed by podiatrists because of the comfort and support of their molded footbed. Unless you’ve tried a pair on, you’re probably not a convert yet – but get them on your feet and you might just find that you’ve been convinced.
