There’s trouble in paradise at the Herbert home as Nike VP and General Manager Ann Herbert has stepped down from her role of 25-years at Nike due to a Bloomberg article published this week. The article explored the VP’s son – Joe Herbert’s – reselling business, West Coast Streetwear, and claims that there’s evidence the 19-year-old used his mother’s connections to gain access to high-heat releases, bots and exclusive discounts.
It’s no secret that bots are a huge irritant in the sneaker scene. Used to cop sneakers quicker than any human can, bots are often responsible for the L you get on that pair of limited-edition kicks. There’s speculation that Joe Herbert had unfair access to limited released thanks to his mum and way back in January 2020, Herbert conveniently stumbles across six pairs of Nike Mags (that resell for over $12,000 each) in a “storage unit”. A source close to the rumours claims that Joe Herbert would buy large numbers of sneakers using his mother’s staff discount, then resell for a profit. Other evidence proves that Joe used a credit card registered in Ann Herbert’s name to fund parts of his business.
It’s worth noting that Ann revealed all details about her son’s business to Nike back in 2018, so she wasn’t keeping this a secret. Also, both Ann and Joe Herbert have denied claims that Ann was involved in any wrongdoing.
The story is still developing, but something definitely seems a bit suss! What do you think? Head over to The Sole Supplier on Instagram to let us know your thoughs, and while you’re here, check out the best new-in bits at Nike now.
