Originally designed back in 1968 as the PUMA Crack, the sneaker received an update in 1971 when the brand signed Walt “Clyde” Frazier, who wanted a low-cut shoe to play in, and a different colourway for every game. A suede build was chosen because it was easy to dye, and rumour has it that over 390 colours were used. At the time, the Crack was renamed to Clyde, though this was changed when Clyde’s contract ended, and the shoe became known as the Suede as it was launched overseas.

The style was especially big in the 90s, when it was adopted by the NYC hip-hop community, as well as skateboarders.
