For a sneaker that's seemingly everywhere in the UK, we know surprisingly little about how the Air Force 1 got here. The Nike Air Force 1 is one of the most popular sneakers to have ever existed. However, ask people about its connection to the UK and you’ll soon be met by the same old, ‘I’m not sure, it’s just a staple isn’t it.” True that may be, but it doesn’t even begin to summarise the AF1’s journey here in the UK.

Across the Atlantic, the Air Force 1 comes with an extensive library of references. Even someone with a passing interest in sneakers could tell you about that one Nelly song. But try finding out when the sneaker established itself in the UK, and the story starts to get murky. Its story here is less obvious, but no less important. So, how exactly did an American icon become part of UK culture? Well, that’s where the story gets interesting.

As the Air Force 1 became frequently imported, the silhouette started to replace other British-born brands as the go-to for people who visited high streets in the UK. The arrival of the silhouette didn’t mark the start of trainer culture in the UK, it was more a changing of the guard.

Serious West London sneaker collector, Magdi Fernandes, recalls the all-black Air Force 1 already started building its road shoe status as far back as the ‘90s. Magdi goes on further, saying “it was laced with one cross lace from the bottom lace hole to the top”, and that, “No other city was lacing shoes that way.” The UK might have been late to adopting the AF1, but was quick to start wearing the shoe its own way.

By the turn of the millennium, the Air Force 1 was slowly starting to establish itself within London fashion, however some regions took longer to warm to the silhouette. While the capital was more open to international trends, especially those coming from the US, other regions like the North West stood firm in its locally-formed subcultures.

UK artist Skepta noticed this separation during his time in Manchester as a youth, saying “I used to come up [to Manchester] in my Air Force 1s, and they used to be like, ‘what you doing in them fucking Yankee crepes blud?”. To people living in cities like Manchester and Liverpool, the Air Force 1 wasn’t just a neutral every day trainer, it was a symbol of America.

London’s underground culture took the silhouette America had been so precious about and sprayed its name across it. The same shoe that got labelled as a “Yankee” trainer in Manchester, was being sprayed with postcodes in London, so it was clear that people in the UK were divided on the Air Force 1.

During the early 2000s, UK retailers such as JD also started stocking exclusive Air Force 1 colourways. Soon, pairs only available on British shelves were attracting attention from sneakerheads across the Atlantic.

Air Force 1s such as the “Skylines”, “Portlands”, “Cowboys” and memorable gum-midsole editions became some of JD's most sought-after releases. Gary Warnett later recalled that the UK-only run from 2002 to 2005 “paid a few enterprising folks' mortgages”, while veteran NikeTalk members remember sending JD exclusives to collectors in America in return for US-only pairs. Warnett even noted how UK pairs like the JD-exclusive “Skylines” were commanding serious money, making their way into New York’s sneaker stores.

As early as 2003, Nike started producing localised Air Force 1 editions, with two pairs nodding to London’s Notting Hill Carnival celebrations. While grime MCs were putting E3 onto their Forces in East London, Nike was officially celebrating a cultural institution over in West. The gap had shrunk from across the Atlantic to across the Big Smoke.

Fourteen years later, British designer Samuel Ross of A-COLD-WALL was handed an Air Force 1 High collaboration. Stripping back the silhouette, Ross reduced the AF1 High to a purer form, combining his industrial design language with formative memories of the shoe. “You always had the Nike tracksuit with the Air Force 1,” Ross recalled in 2017, acknowledging the uniform he had grown up seeing around London.

The relationship between the UK and Air Force 1 reached its latest milestone in 2026, when Central Cee and Syna World received their own Air Force 1. Five years earlier, Cench had already named white Forces among his favourite trainers, and now one of UK rap’s biggest exports was officially reinterpreting the silhouette himself. Nike’s own description of the “Dark Beetroot” collaboration perhaps summarised the journey best: “The ultimate seal of approval, an Air Force 1 collab is a big deal. Especially when such a powerful American symbol gets interpreted in Europe.”

You’ll find London artists like AntsLive and Finessekid in the loudest Air Force 1s, while Aitch keeps his triple whites clean in Manchester. Next-up streetwear brands are lacing them up for lookbooks, while over in central you’ll spot Forces paired with the cleanest looking joggers. But the clearest sign of how thoroughly the UK has adopted the Air Force 1 is that wearing a pair today isn’t about making a statement, it just is.

There is no denying that a large part of the Air Force 1 story still belongs to the US, but the UK’s chapters are definitely worth telling. For too long, the UK’s start with the Air Force 1 has existed within the blogs of purist sneakerheads and abandoned NikeTalk threads, rarely making it much further. From being an absolute myth to find in the ‘90s, to becoming a rotation staple for people across the nation, the Nike Air Force 1 has travelled a long way. The UK never needed to invent its Air Force 1 culture, it just needed to put in enough hours wearing the shoe to become part of its history.
