Halloween sneakers have become somewhat of an annual staple for the Swoosh brand, with plenty of high-heat pairs launching over the years. While we’ve seen some solid releases, none remain quite as iconic as the Nike SB Dunk Low “Freddy Krueger” - a pair that never actually saw an official release. The sneakers were set to launch back in 2007 as part of the “Horror Stories” pack, along with the “Jason Vorhees” SB Dunk High and the “Dawn of the Dead” Air Trainer 1. Unfortunately, New Line Cinema (the company that owns the rights to A Nightmare on Elm Street) quickly ordered a cease and desist notice to Nike regarding the Kruegers, meaning that the release was cancelled worldwide.
While the majority of pairs were pulled in time, that didn’t stop a single skate store in Mexico selling a grand total of just 26 pairs before the release date, making these one of the most limited and sought-after Nike SB releases ever. There’s also a handful of oil-stained pairs that have surfaced on the secondary market, which were reportedly rescued from a large amount of the kicks that were set to be burnt at Nike HQ after the cease and desist was issued.
The seemingly miniscule amount of these Dunks in circulation has helped them rise to legendary status, and become one of the rarest pairs to ever exist. The design of the sneakers is largely based around the horror villain’s signature striped sweater, with other details including blood splatters, leather Swooshes and gory insoles inspired by Freddy’s face. Intended to be launched during the iconic gold box period of Nike SB, these Dunks were designed by none other than Todd Bratrud, the illustrator and designer responsible for plenty of other high-heat SB releases, most notably the SB Dunk High “Skunk” and “Strawberry Cough”.
While these Dunks have always been hard-to-come-by and desirable, in recent years the hype behind the silhouette has grown to unprecedented levels, spearheaded by high-profile celebrities rocking limited-edition variants. Stars such as Travis Scott and Kendall Jenner have both been spotted wearing the Freddy Krueger SBs, with Kylie Jenner reportedly buying Kendall’s pair from StockX for $27,500 as a Christmas gift.
With the chance of Nike ever releasing another Freddy Krueger-themed Dunk extremely low, back in 2020 hardcore sneaker fans were given the chance to own the closest they’ll likely ever get to a pair, in the form of Nike Air Max 95 “Velvet Brown/Team Red”. While not an official collaboration with New Line Cinema or A Nightmare on Elm Street, the kicks didn’t feature the striped pattern seen on Freddy’s sweater, which is what the initial trademark was reportedly over.
With all this being said, it’s unlikely that Nike will ever make another pair as risky as the SB Dunk Low “Freddy Krueger” was back then. In the early 2000s the sneaker scene was a very different place, with plenty of releases flying straight under the radar, which allowed the brand to create riskier-concepts such as the highly-coveted Nike SB Dunk Low “Heineken”, which also wasn’t an official collaboration. In this day and age the sneaker industry is a crucial part of mainstream culture, with factory leaks also acting as a vital stage of the hype-building process. This begs the question, would the Freddy’s be so highly-coveted had they actually released? I guess we’ll never know.
