Although they're definitely killing the game right now, New Balance have historically had a bit of a reputation for being a bit of a dad brand. In fact, they’ve actively embraced it for a large part of their existence. Some of their most iconic campaigns poke fun of the fact that their products are worn by “Supermodels in London, and Dads in Ohio,” but their newest shoe takes the idea to a whole new level. So, allow us to introduce you to the New Balance 2002R Mule, the final boss of dad shoes, which is set to arrive in two colourways, “Rain Cloud” and “Mindful Grey.”
The mule trend is nothing new. Crocs and Birkenstocks have been making waves over the past couple of years, and this isn’t actually New Balance’s first mule either. A few years back the brand released the M801 Clog, but this new pair plays on their famed 2002R silhouette, although the chopped-off top means they’re not exactly suitable for running. The 2002R Mule does feature the same tech as the 2002R sneaker though, with ABZORB heel cushioning for added comfort. You’ll notice that the laces are also missing, with a solid upper completing the mule look.
The New Balance 2002R Mule is definitely polarising, but we can’t help but think it’s a pretty clever move from the Boston-based brand. If the 2002R falls into ‘Dad Shoe’ territory, then making an even more extreme version feels slightly Balenciaga-esq. Whether you’ll be steering far clear of these, copping for yourself or for your dad, or at least borrowing his pair to take the bins out, let us know what you think of them. The pairs are already available in China, but there’s no set release date for the UK yet. In the meantime, hit the links to set a release reminder and keep it locked for more info as it comes in!
Up next, a super-clean colourway has joined the New Balance 2002R Protection Pack.
