2020, the start of a new decade, a year that began with talk of World War 3 and then fears of a global pandemic. It may seem bleak but that's just not the case for us sneaker collectors. Far from it as this year, we've enjoyed the thrill of copping (or attempting to cop) one hyped release after another.
Here we look back on these last couple months, picking out those sneakers that went on to become serious commodities on the resell market. In other words, the following 10 sneakers from 2020 are fetching the highest profit on platforms like StockX! The question is, would you pay this much?!
Weeks before that Travis Scott collaboration and already there was hype for Nike's iconic SB Dunk. It's now being dubbed as the up and coming sneaker of 2020 - possibly a model to rival the popularity of the Air Force 1? We might thank this particular collab from skate brand Strangelove for starting the trend. With the help of designers Sean Cliver and Todd Bratrud, this velvet adorned masterpiece arrived just in time for Valentine's Day. Since then, prices have crept well over £400 on StockX with the lowest ask at around £393!
It's hard to say if this Yeezy would command such a high resell price if stock wasn't so limited. Unlike most styles from Kanye's line-up, these didn't officially release. Instead, several military trucks roamed the streets of Chicago stopping at random to offload their haul to crowds of excited sneakerheads. Not surprisingly for such a one-off release, this high-top will set you back anywhere from £650 to £790.
Edison Chen returned early this year with yet another tear-away Nike collaboration. Just like the previous two colourways, this pair features a traditional oriental print made even more luxurious thanks to fine silk uppers. But there's something even more mysterious about this pair and it's only revealed with time. That silk is made to degrade meaning there'll eventually wear away to reveal a tumbled leather upper. Thanks to a painfully limited release, the lowest ask on StockX starts from £524 but some sizes are selling for almost £1,000!
It was only a matter of time before Virgil Abloh put his talent to the Air Jordan 5. After all, this was one of his favourite sneakers growing up. Describing his love for the pair, Abloh commented, "For me, it was like they came from a superhero. I was sleeping with the shoes in my bedroom, on the dresser, so I could see them when I woke up.” With the 30th anniversary happening this year, there wasn't a better time for this Off-White exclusive. Following a Nike SNEAKRS launch in February, these shot up in price and are still reselling for £523 to £750.
The first official skate shoe from Travis Scott also happens to be the most lucrative of resell kicks on this list. In fact, this pair is so sought-after that people are willing to pay anywhere from £899 to £1000. Prices are even more shocking if you want to purchase the pair that sits in a special-branded box. With the shoe decked out in paisley canvas and plaid flannel overlays, this pair is just as eye-catching as it is expensive!
Only 23,000 pairs of this Jordan 1 released which would explain why it makes the cut as this year's most profitable releases. As a celebration of Jordan 1s 35th anniversary, this style takes it right back to the old school with a look and feel very similar to that of the OG "Banned". If you want a pair, you'll have to fork out at least £520 - the lowest ask right now on StockX!
Sacai's Creative Director Chitose Abe returns with yet another sought-after collaboration. In a similar theme to last year's sellout releases, both a black and white pair this time feature soft nylon uppers. The unusual look remains, however, with that doubling up of the sidewall Swoosh and tongues. Resell prices start from £250 and go much higher depending on the size!
This AJ1 is the most affordable on this list but still worthy of featuring thanks to the cost of certain sizes. Anything from UK3 to UK5 is fetching eye-watering prices of well over £450. Admittedly, this is an example in premium styling that is completely void of gimmicks or over the top design. Instead, the low-key yet stylish colourway is what set it apart from many other Jordan 1 Lows in recent months.
The other half of Sacai's 2020 collaboration is just as in-demand as the black colourway. Depending on your preference, this pair could be even more appealing. After all, summer is coming and you just know these will be the ultimate holiday crep. Unfortunately, these are selling for anywhere from £250 to £400.
Re-selling for slightly more than its "Triple Black" counterpart, the Yeezy 700 MNVN might actually seem quite reasonable. That said, these did retail for only £180, which is £70 less than the usual retail price of the Yeezy 700. The orange pair was especially limited and would explain why sizes are selling for well over £300!
