In 2022, New Balance reissued its retro hiking shoe, the Rainier. Now, making a return in 2023 is the Allagash, the Boston footwear brand’s low-cut answer to mountainside footwear. Originally released as a shoe for lighter hikes, the Allagash functions equally as well in the streets as it does on the trails.
The palette is typical of the brand’s ‘70s outdoor gear, combining earthy tones and natural leathers on this “Glazed Ginger” edition. Similar to the ALD iterations, these fit perfectly into the formal workwear aesthetic, pairing well with some baggy denim or cargo trousers. The same brown leather found on the first Rainier edition returns, forming the structural panelling on the upper while a wine-red canvas underlay provides contrast. The hard-wearing materials of the upper are matched by the Vibram Sole underfoot, making sure that both can withstand the test of time as many of the old boots did. Old-school New Balance branding is debossed into the leather sidewall, with a similar hit applied to the woven label on the tongue that help recreate the aesthetic of the original release.
If you’ve had your eye on the New Balance Rainier but can’t quite get over its high cut, then the Allagash is the perfect solution. Channel your inner ‘70s hiker by lacing up the New Balance Allagash and stroll on by The Sole Supplier to find out how to grab your pair!
