There have been many Air Max offerings with a black, white and yellow make-up in Nike’s back catalogue, with this Air Max 1 “Athletics Department” soon to join the library. Whether it was the Air Max 97 “Steelers” from 2018 or the Air Max 90 “Livestrong” from 2009, this leaked Air Max 1 is within good company. While the first in-hand photos are limited, they do give us a good look at what could be a great addition to 2023’s Air Max 1 line-up.
A black suede mudguard and Swoosh sets the standard on this iteration, with an equally muted grey mesh underlay. The main forefoot panel opts for a premium cut of tumbled leather, a surprising move when considering the rest of the uniform tooling. Underfoot, the AM1’s traction is split into different sections of black and yellow, comparable to the split seen on the previously mentioned Air Max 90 “Livestrong”. Nike Air branding on the heel is embroidered in dark gold thread, moving away from the obvious yellow tone, another indication of the premium tooling on this “Athletic Department” edition.
Initially landing on the Nike website on the 5th of July, this "Athletic Department" flew out in bigger sizes upon its release, reaffirming the love for the Air Max 1 was still very much present.
