Nike Air Max 1 Tokyo 23 Yellow Navy

Nike adds another Tokyo-inspired release to pay homage to the city that helped drive sneakerhead culture since the late ‘90s. After the Air Max 1 “Shima Shima” was released in the first quarter of 2023, along with the Air Trainer 1 in 2022, it’s clear that the Swoosh wants to recognise Japan’s role within its Air Max range. This Air Max 1 Tokyo 23 “Yellow Navy” carries that theme forward, delivering the coveted silhouette in a striking colourway that pays homage to collegiate Dunk editions of the '80s.

Inspired by the "Reverse Michigan" Dunk Low from '99, the palette is a flip on the classic Nike Dunk High “Michigan” that debuted in the '80s. The use of reptile-like panelling is a familiar feature seen on older Swoosh-based releases such as the Air Max 90 “Python” that retro’d in 2019 or even the upcoming Dunk Low CO.JP “Snakeskin Brown” which also looks to celebrate the co.JP movement. On this AM1, smooth leather forms the toe box and eyestay panels, with indications of quality tooling. As for the mudguard and heel, a reptile-like yellow leather wraps around the bottom of the shoe, with a navy mini Swoosh beckoning on the outer toe. The most obvious snakeskin accent comes via the Swoosh, where flecks of brown closely mimic the real thing, something that hasn’t been done since the early 2000s era at Nike’s Innovation Kitchen.

Dropping over on the atmos Japan website as part of its "Head 2 Head" raffle, which also includes the Nike Dunk Low CO.JP "Snakeskin Brown", the pair will landing in Asia on the 9th of June.
