It seems things can't stay simple for adidas anymore these days. After announcing that it was set to pause all YEEZY releases for the remainder of the year and heading into 2024, it seems like the story of the remaining stock from its Kanye West partnership may have taken another drastic turn.
During a recent conference call, Bjørn Gulden explained that the company is considering whether or not to write-off the all remaining YEEZY stock instead of picking up the roll out at some point in the future.
adidas has confirmed that, at this point, it has around €300 million remaining in YEEZY products. To write-off this cache, the brand would suffer a one-off €200 million cost, meaning a total of half a billion euros would have to be spent to rid adidas of its issue.
Gulden also noted, "We of course hope that we can do more drops next year and that we can get value out of it and donate proceeds to anti-hate groups but right now, financially, we haven’t made the decision."
adidas is already set to make a positive impact by allocating €140 million from this year's two YEEZY drops to organisations dedicated to combating discrimination and hate. This decision follows Kanye West's regrettable antisemitic rant in October of last year.
