After receiving criticism since its initial boom, luxury fashion company Canada Goose has finally vowed to stop using coyote fur in its products. Known mostly for their fur-lined winter jackets, the North American brand has now said they will stop buying fur by the end of this year and cease manufacturing it by 2022.
This environmentally conscious decision follows years of backlash over the brand's use of fur and the ways in which it's procured. Anyone native to a city with a Canada Goose store nearby will be familiar with tropes of protestors lining the pavements outside to voice their objections on an almost daily basis.
Despite the constant protesting, Canada Goose's President Dani Reese told the New York Times: "The fact that we’ve been targeted did not factor into this decision at all." Instead, Dani Reese explained the choice to stop using fur was instead linked to the company aiming to be more sustainable.
Naturally, animal welfare group PETA disagreed with Canada Goose with President Ingrid Newkirk saying "After years of eye-catching protests, hard-hitting exposés, celebrity actions, and legal battles, as the company has finally conceded and will stop using fur".
In recent times other large companies have made similar moves to be more eco-conscious with the likes of Versace, Gucci and Micheal Kors all opting to go fur-free. It remains to be seen how this move will affect Canada Goose but right now this remains a victory for the environmentally sound among us.
