Shoe critics and resellers have been quick to declare the Dunks a thing of the past. Yet Nike is pushing back with an upcoming release that celebrates one of the most iconic movements in music history and challenges the narrative that "Dunks are dead."
While the era of every new Dunk colourway instantly selling out has faded, that doesn’t mean the silhouette is without its highlights. Striking new designs continue to drop, though the buzz surrounding the Dunk has noticeably quieted. No longer the sneaker of the moment, the Nike Dunk now has to work harder to capture attention; whether by reviving coveted grails such as the Wu Tang Dunk, experimenting with bold materials, or, as in this case, making a provocative statement.
Enter the Dunk Low “Dunks Not Dead,” a sneaker that reignites the conversation. While it doesn’t directly comment on Dunk’s historical trends, the shoe’s very name feels like a response to claims of its decline. And there’s no denying the numbers: StockX data shows a 41% year on year drop in Dunk sales on the resale market. The message behind this release seems clear; Nike is ready to get aggressive in restoring the Dunk’s former glory.
With its gritty, handcrafted construction, the “Dunks Not Dead” screams punk rock swagger. Rough olive canvas overlays accent its black leather base for a worn in, vintage look. A pink suede Swoosh adds a splash of contrast, while exposed stitching and raw edges emphasise a DIY spirit reminiscent of punk fashion.
Customisation takes centre stage with velcro panels and removable pin badges, including one that declares, “DUNKS NOT DEAD.” This pin nods to Punk’s Not Dead, the legendary 1981 debut album by Scottish punk band The Exploited, adding layers of cultural significance to the design.
Set to launch in Spring 2025, this punk inspired Nike Dunk is expected to retail for £114. The real question remains: Can this release help bring Dunks from the dead? Only time will tell.
