People are clearly loving minimal sneakers and PUMA is getting in on the action with its Speedcat. Swallowed up by fashion kids in Soho, the retro release of the PUMA Speedcat has found its place among trend setters and with good reason. Locked away in the PUMA archive for nearly twenty five years, this restyling of this motorsport classic dropped in 2024 and has seen a meteoric rise in popularity. We have noticed this first hand as here at The Sole Supplier, spotting a pair at the office has become a common sighting.
With a strong selection of colourways already out, the Speedcat catalogue is only growing in number, making right now the best time to grab a pair. To make your online shopping experience easier than ever, we’ve put together this handy guide for the PUMA Speedcat to answer every question you might have. Covering everything from sizing and comfort to styling and our favourite colourways, keep reading to find out everything you need to know about the PUMA Speedcat.
The PUMA Speecat fits true to size. For those who have a slimmer foot and don’t mind a snug fit, we recommend taking your standard size. Thanks to the shoe’s origins as a race driving shoe, the narrow design language looks trendy but means those with wider feet might find the shoe quite tight. If you do have wider feet, we would say going up by half a size is your best bet.
After giving the Speedcat a wear test throughout the last month, we can say that the shoe provides medium levels of comfort, similar to that of a Converse or Adidas Gazelle. It depends on the type of shoes that you are used to wearing, if you enjoy Terrace-style footwear then you will feel right at home. However, if you prefer the Y2K mesh runner style, you may find that the Speedcat takes getting used to. The reason for minimal cushioning is because the shoe was intended for race drivers who needed maximum pedal feel. If you appreciate solid ground feel and flexibility across your forefoot then this PUMA is ideal.
Given that the majority of the colourways are constructed from suede, the Speedcat will stretch and give over time. Similar to the leather editions, you will find that the shoe will form to your foot given enough wear. As for the Speedcat’s break-in period, we reckon this requires little to no time at all. This is due to the soft upper and thin sole, meaning there is not much foam to break in the first place.
When it comes to styling the Speedcat, we found it a simple task. Depending on which colour you go for, the shoe will match just about any casual outfit you throw on. We would go with a baggy denim, jogger or other semi-loose silhouette that would complement the design of the Speedcat. For those who typically wear bulkier trainers that fit into the Y2K aesthetic, you may have to get used to the slimmer profile of the shoe which can throw people off at first. If you feel like your jeans are covering up too much of the shoe then don’t worry, that is just one of the many ways which you can style them.
As PUMA keeps adding fire colourways of the Speedcat, this choice is getting harder by the week. We asked around the office and came up with the three best editions that are ripe for your rotation. First off is the OG Red make-up, a pair spotted among the feet of racing legend Michael Schumacher, as well as being papped up on Em Rata and Dua Lipa. Next up is the Coffee edition, a pair that sold out straight away when it first dropped but is now back in stock. Last but not least is the pink Speedcat, one that truly represents how the fashion girlies have made the shoe their own!
