For many of us, sneakers mean more than just another pair of shoes; they're a way of expressing our individual style. We all have that one silhouette or colourway that started our love for sneakers. In Nike's latest 'By You' journey, the Swoosh brand asked 20 Londoners to create their own designs, sharing their individual story that depicts their own view of the city.
We take a closer look at the 12 females behind the designs included in the collection. Each shoe showcases their individual style and tells a story about identity, creativity, diversity, female empowerment and more. The special-edition Nike By You Workshop designs will be available to shop until 13th August 2020.
Hadiyah explores culture, creativity and community in her 'Culture Clash' Air Max 90. A blend of earthy tones and bright teal create a bold looking sneaker, with touches of orange across the midsole and sidewalls. The Textiles Print Designer represents a unity of cultures through her design.
Sandy Kaur draws on her passion for sneakers that began as an escape. Her 'Reborn' Air Max 95 uses varying shades of green to create a tonal effect, reflecting the nature surrounding the residents around London. The gradient of shades is representative of how the big city encourages constant change, allowing us to grow and restore.
DJ, radio host and label owner, Saint Ludo uses club culture as her inspiration for her 'Can You Hear It' Air Max 90. The blacked-out upper is contrasted with touches of neon green across the sidewall and midsole. A shoe that represents the change that is around the corner, particularly for the Black Lives Matter movement.
Jade Mac J combines her love of clothes, sneakers, writing and justice to create this tonal 'Inc.' Air Max 95. Diversity, inclusivity and equal opportunities are the messages this shoe conveys, whilst showing the true beauty of black women. Each layer is individually coloured in a gradient working from light brown above the midsole, the black around the lace unit.
Freelance Artist, Artsoulchild hones in on her love for drawing and sculpture to create the 'Route My Roots' Air Max 95. The contrasting colours used on this design display the mixture of styles and tastes that London has to offer. Hits of red across the outsole, contrast with the tonal green sidewalls, a perfect blend of bold and subtle in one.
Nicole Chui takes her experience as an East London girl living in Hackney to produce the 'Vixens' Air Max 95. The red colourway represents the vixen which is a female fox seen in and around the area of Hackney. The bold touches of red are contrasted with lighter shades of beige along the sidewalls, complimented with a white midsole. She dedicates this poping sneaker to her London sisterhood.
Sneaker lover, Titi Finlay is a content creator and artist. Her love for sneakers shines through with her extensive collection, keen to be one of the women at the forefront of change in the sneaker scene. She's here to show that sneakers aren't just for boys with the 'Power To The Female' Air Max 90, a bold coloured design that's made for men and women, inspired by retro styles.
Azcaptures is a Photographer based in London who grew up on the East side of the city. Her 'Speedlite AZ001-5' Air Max 95 brings out her love of photography using the idea of light and flash to illuminate certain situations and events. Capturing those all-important moments before they're gone.
Taslima Khan is a Fashion Designer, Stylist and Artist from London who celebrates the multicultural environment that London encourages. A city that unites cultures. Each layer of her 'Change Makeair' AM95 is representative of a culture, encouraging people to become change-makers.
Hanan uses bold colours to create a sneaker that's inspired by the snap of city life, like a Niloticus Crocodile. Pops of bright green brighten up the laces, whilst a touch of blue that's used in Ancient Egyptian iconography adds an accent of colour to the eyelets of her 'Nilos 39.8' AM90.
The 'You Alright Mate?' Air Max 95 is a design created by Illustrator, Emma Balbela taking inspiration directly from Highbury Fields. A favourite in her collection, the designer adds her personal style to create a completely green colourway to reflect her home, N7.
Bringing the heat with a vibrant red upper and black midsole is professional dancer, Shortie Bucks 'Luv Ldn' Air Max 95. A sneaker that represents just how diverse the city of London is, expressing bold style with the red upper that's symbolic of LDN's famous buses and telephone boxes.
