With sustainability more important than ever and brand’s being pressured to reduce their carbon footprint, fashion houses are looking for new ways to reduce waste and utilise scrap materials, and so the New Balance 998 gets an environmentally friendly makeover. Utilising the surplus material that’s often discarded from their factories, NB is now offering an extremely limited run of the 998 sneaker in five colourways.
Each pair is ultra-unique and is made according to size and every single one uses surplus materials – with new fabrics added if necessary, to polish the shoe off. The campaign imagery creatively shows the original thought process behind the sneaker, with scrap fabric scattered from toe to heel. However, the shoe itself boasts a clean, streamlined silhouette and utilises rich colourways and premium fabrics. Fitted with the brand’s exclusive Abzorb cushioning, these sustainable sneaks cover every base.
New Balance is just one of many sports brands doing their bit to reduce waste. The brand has claimed that in the future, they hope to create products that don’t require the use of toxic substances, have no negative effect on the environment and create no waste. So, while the limited-edition New Balance 998 is a step in the right direction, the brand is still striving for more.
The 100 pairs of the New Balance 998 that were crafted have now sold out, but we’re holding out hope for a restock and ultimately, a resurgence of the 998 silhouette!
While we’re on the topic of sportswear and sustainability, find out if adidas is the most environmentally sportswear brand in the world now.
