Palace and UGG? Fine, we've seen that rodeo before; a guaranteed ticket to instant sell out status. But chuck in Tweety and Sylvester from the Looney Tunes crew? That’s not a collaboration; that’s a chaotic act of cultural collage. How will it fare? Looking at the collection, there’s definitely a lot to be excited about.
At the first glance, this three way mash up between Palace, UGG, and Warner Bros seems strategically bonkers. While other heavy hitters, like Nike’s recent foray with NETFLIX for the Stranger Things capsule, keep things mostly contained, this venture aims a cannon at a sprawling audience. You have the skaters who bleed Palace, the style aficionados who live in UGG, and then you have the entire population of the early 2000s nostalgic.
Let’s not pretend we don't know what’s going to happen on 5th December. This gear is disappearing faster than Wile E. Coyote can realise he’s run off a cliff. We can understand that this can be, at least to some extent, down to the sheer unadulterated hype we see around anything Palace touches.
However, the chatter on social media tells a more interesting story. People are not just buying into the hype; they are genuinely buzzing about the nostalgia. The comments sections on the official announcement post are flooded with shouts about how this drop drags them straight back to the 2000s. "Early 2000’s vibe of CN (Cartoon Network) commercial," commented one user. And the standout piece? It's that Wool Varsity Jacket. It seems the apparel, not just the revamped Ultra Mini and Tasman footwear with their multi layer embroidery of the classic chase, is hitting a generational sweet spot.
The meshing of Looney Tunes with urban and street culture is not new. From the Mighty Shirt Kings in 1980s Queens turning Bugs Bunny into an edgy street figure, to the major corporate licensing boom sparked by Space Jam, these cartoons have never been just innocent Saturday morning viewing. They have always carried a cultural currency, a slightly rebellious edge.
The Tweety and Sylvester chase captured in the embroidery on the Tasman and Ultra Mini is a direct nod to the decades long tradition of adapting these characters into the language of the street. It’s an appropriation, but this time, it’s legitimised and marketed by the brand that built its reputation on the very aesthetics it celebrates.
This collection, from the fictional hotel maze campaign featuring Shygirl to the brazen comfort of a $200 sheepskin boot, doesn't just sell trainers and coats. It sells a slice of that glorious, unruly history; the one where cartoons were transformed into a uniform of the counter culture.
The Palace x UGG x Looney Tunes capsule is dropping on 5th December, on the Palace website and stores as well as select retailers. What do you guys think about this collab? By the way, if you want to get your hands on these UGGs for retail, you need to hit that bell icon and we'll notify you when these drop.
