Whether you consider yourself a sneakerhead or not, chances are at some point in your life you’ve considered adding a pair of Vans Sk8-His to your rotation. Easily one of the most recognisable sneaker silhouettes going, the Vans Sk8-Hi is steeped in history, and has been a long-standing part of the scene since it debuted back in the 70s. Ideally designed for skating (the clue is in the name, after all), the Sk8 Hi took skate shoes to a whole new level, with the higher cut designed to provide skaters with more ankle support than its predecessor, the Vans Old Skool Sneaker, but its comfort on the board quickly translated itself to the sidewalk, too.
The shoe, which was originally dubbed the ‘Style 38’ was the second Vans sneaker to boast its now iconic side stripe detail, which at the time was known as the ‘Jazz Stripe.’ The model’s high-top cut was developed to offer the level of support Vans’ customers were asking for, which would work alongside the brand’s classic waffle tread to create the ultimate skateboarding shoe. As skate culture and surf style began to transcend their counter-cultural circles, the style started to find its footing in wider culture, leading it to become a real rotation staple, and the shoe of choice for many a brand collab too.
Spotted on everyone from Gigi Hadid to Hailey Bieber, the Sk8 Hi’s classic styling and extreme comfort have meant the shoe has built on its origin as a skateboarding sneaker and it has since found itself as one of fashion's most loved shoes, but if you have yet to get your hands on a pair, you may have a few questions on how the Vans Sk8-Hi fits, and whether it's really that comfortable. Luckily for you, we’ve got the first-hand experience that covers just about everything you need to know about Vans Sk8-Hi sizing, styling and comfort, so read on to find out more.
There’s no need to size up or down in the Vans Sk8-Hi, as the shoe fits true to size. You may find that because of the high-top build the Sk8-Hi is a little hard to get on and off, but don’t let this influence which size you buy. Simply loosening the laces will make this much easier. Sizing down will mean that the shoes will pinch your toes, and sizing up will stop them from fitting as securely as they should. Even if you’re not skating in them, you definitely don’t want them to feel like they’re slipping. Because of their build, those with a more narrow ankle might find that they fit a little wide around the back, but again this can be sorted by adjusting the tightness of the laces.
Yes and no. Because of their slightly rigid ankle support, Vans Sk8-His can take a little longer to break in than other sneaker styles, but after a few wears you’ll be good as gold.
Because the build is pretty basic (the shoe is made from canvas and suede) don’t expect mindblowing comfort levels from the Sk8-Hi. The shoe hasn’t changed much since its inception in the ‘70s, and the tech definitely reflects that. It’s not exactly breathable, and its sole unit is relatively flat, with very little cushioning underfoot. If you’re looking for a comfier pair, Vans does make a Comfycush version, which adds more arch support and moisture-wicking lining to get around these issues.
The Vans Sk8-Hi is a staple of streetwear style, and is super easy to wear. Those who aren’t exactly new to the style might remember wearing them with skinny jeans as they were growing up, but that’s definitely not the only option. In our opinion, Vans Sk8-Hi’s look good with casual outfits that lean into more of a retro vibe - think loose jeans and vintage-looking sweatshirts - or with ‘fits that lean into skate style - you can’t go wrong with Skate Hi’s and a pair of Dickies 874s.
If you’re looking to add a pair of Vans Sk8-His to your collection, it's worth knowing that you’ll be in good company. The style has been worn by pretty much everyone who’s anyone, from TikTokers like Addison Rae who paired hers with a vest and cargos, to the likes of Bella Hadid and Zendaya, who often rock them with cut-off denim shorts and a baby tee.
Of course, it's not just the girls who are rocking Sk8-His either - the sport was dominated by men for a very long time, after all. Celebs such as Zac Efron and Justin Bieber are often seen out and about in the style, matching the pairs with Dickies, jeans or shorts depending on their jet-set lifestyle.
The Vans Sk8-Hi has seen its fair share of iconic pairs, often serving as the base for many a collab. From bands like Iron Maiden and Slayer to franchises such as Star Wars and Disney, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t wanted a Vans collab. In terms of more fashion-focused partnerships, Palm Angels and Joe Freshgoods have also turned their attention to the model, as have BAPE and PATTA to name just a few. In our opinion though, the classic black and white pair is pretty hard to beat - there’s a reason why it’s never gone out of style!
So, there you have it. Stick to your true size in Vans Sk8-His, and you'll be absolutely fine!
