First introduced back in the year 2000, the Nike Air Kukini is somewhat of an enigma in the sneaker world. Upon the initial release the sneaker looked like nothing else the world had seen before and was met with mixed reviews. Even two decades on, there’s still nothing quite like the wacky design of the Kukini, although that hasn’t stopped the silhouette developing a cult following over the years.
Favoured by Swoosh enthusiasts and fans of unconventional aesthetics, the rarely-seen model has now returned to Nike’s current lineup, with plenty of eye-catching colourways available right now. Join us as we take a closer look at some of the resurfaced pairs and share some lesser-known facts regarding the mysterious sneaker.
To coincide with the millennium, Nike launched a brand-new subdivision titled the Alpha Project, with the goal of pushing design boundaries and incorporating cutting-edge technology. Identified by a subtle row of five dots that featured on every sneaker that was part of the line, the Alpha Project birthed the Nike Air Kukini, as well as other recognisable silhouettes such as Nike Air Presto. The project came to a quiet demise by 2004, and there’s no plans for the range to ever return. Sneaker purists have compared the Alpha Project to the recent ISPA series, with both ranges pushing similar narratives and design language.
The Nike Air Kukini was designed by none other than Sean McDowell, the same man responsible for birthing the ever-popular Air Max Plus (or TN, as it’s commonly referred to). Rumour has it that the webbed overlay section of the Kukini was inspired by a spider web graphic seen on the suit of Olympic skier Picabo Street. This feature was not just good-looking, either, as it was actually designed to keep the foot held down for optimum performance and comfort.
While they are radically different designs, there’s also one striking similarity between the AM Plus and the Kukini - the use of TPU overlays to further structure the uppers. Plenty of sneakerheads claim to hate the Air Kukini due to its unique looks, however there’s no doubting the fact that the design can hold its own when it comes to individuality. Be sure to check out some of the currently available pairs above, and while you’re with us, check out our deep dive into the complex history of the Nike TN too!
